Torrential rain flooded parts of southeastern Texas today, leading schools to shut down and causing many highways near Houston to close.
The National Weather Service says that over the last day, there’s been more than 9 inches of rain. Because of this, they’ve issued a flood warning for the area until Tuesday.
This morning, there was a warning about a flash flood in the area.
There’s a spot by the San Jacinto River that’s getting a lot of attention. It’s likely going to keep rising because there’s more rain coming, and officials are letting out extra water from a reservoir that’s already full.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who’s in charge of the third-largest county in the US, has made it necessary for people living by parts of the river to leave their homes. She says it’s really dangerous and could put lives at risk.

This morning, the weather service said the river was at 66.2 feet. They think it will reach its highest point at 76.6 feet on Saturday.
The river reaches flood stage at 58 feet, as per the weather service.
Hidalgo told people living near the river in the southern part of the county that if they stay home, they might get stuck there for several days.
No one got hurt or died, but rescuers saved a few folks from flooding.
In the last month, heavy storms hit southeast Texas and parts of Louisiana, bringing over 2 feet of rain, as reported by the National Weather Service.
