I’ve been watching MMA for more than 30 years and reporting on it for more than 10 years.

UFC 300 Recap: Max Holloway’s

I’ve never seen anything like Max Holloway’s knockout win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Check out this cool video from The Athletic showing the view from the crowd!

Check out this post from FanDuel Sportsbook that shows the exciting moment everyone watching TV loved!

Everyone watching TV had a great time.

Holloway pretty much controlled the entire fight against Gaethje, except for one moment when he got knocked down for the first time in his career in the fourth round by a powerful overhand right.

Holloway was about to win the fight easily with a unanimous decision when he scored an explosive knockout with only one second left.

After the fourth round, a judge surprisingly scored the fight. However, in the fifth round, Holloway managed to hurt Gaethje before the thrilling ending.

Holloway would likely have won the fight even without the decisive finish, probably by scores of 49-46 on two judges’ cards and 48-47 on the third.

Holloway didn’t have to embrace the “baddest motherf****r” style of fighting to win, which makes his choice to swiftly knock out Gaethje even more impressive.

Here’s how some MMA fighters and others in the UFC community reacted.

To give more insight, Gaethje isn’t just any lightweight fighter comfortable at 155 pounds. He’s a former interim lightweight champion who has faced and defeated some of the toughest competitors in his division.

Holloway scored one of the most incredible knockout finishes against this guy. It’s worth noting that Holloway was only fighting in the 155-pound category for the second time.

He didn’t just seem strong; he appeared capable of taking on Islam Makhachev for the 155-pound title. Even after three losses to Alexander Volkanovski, some might have thought Holloway’s days as a top contender were done.

That’s not true.

Arman Tsrukyan won an exciting fight against Charles Oliveira on the main card. This victory puts him in a prime position for a rematch with Makhachev for the lightweight title.

Maybe Holloway should consider going back down to 145 pounds to try and win back the title he lost to Volkanovski. During his post-fight interview, Holloway mentioned Ilia Topuria as someone he’s interested in facing.

Holloway’s performance could end up being the standout moment from the UFC’s most massive event ever.
