Student Shot Dead by Police at Wisconsin School

Officials had said there was a person with a gun who didn’t manage to get into Mount Horeb Middle School. They were stopped outside. The State Attorney General, Josh Kaul, said on Wednesday evening that nobody else was hurt, and they’re still looking into what happened.

“He said this happened outside. The person involved didn’t get inside anywhere.”

Officials called the student a young boy but didn’t say how old he was or which school in the Mount Horeb district he went to.

Kaul didn’t answer some questions about what happened when the police arrived, like if the student had a weapon, what type it was, and if he tried to get into the school. They said that several Mount Horeb officers, who were wearing body cameras, fired weapons, but they didn’t say how many.

Police stayed at the location for many hours. Students were kept inside buildings for a long time until later in the afternoon when they were allowed to leave and go home with their families.

Scared kids and their worried parents had to wait nervously. Some kids were so scared they hid in closets and couldn’t talk on the phone. One kid even said his class ran out of the gym using roller skates at first.

The district used Facebook posts all day to share updates. The first one, around 11:30 a.m., said all schools in the area were on lockdown. Officials in Mount Horeb said the person who was believed to have caused harm was the only one injured. Witnesses heard gunshots and saw many children running.

Hours later, many school buses were still parked in long lines outside the middle school. Police tape surrounded the middle school, the nearby high school, and the fields between them.

Around noon, a post said that they searched the middle school but didn’t find any more suspects. They also mentioned that no one else got hurt except for the person who was said to have attacked others.

Earlier, officials said they stopped a threat outside a building in Mount Horeb, a small village near Madison, the capital of Wisconsin.

Jeanne Keller heard five gunshots while she was in her shop called The Quilting Jeanne. Her shop is located near the middle school.

Keller heard some loud sounds, like “pow-pow-pow-pow.” He thought it was fireworks. He went outside and saw lots of kids running. Maybe around 200 children.

One kid in middle school mentioned that they were practicing rollerblading in the school gym when they suddenly heard gunshots.

Max Kelly, who is 12 years old, said his teacher told everyone in his class to run away. They quickly skated to a nearby street, left their skates behind, and hurried to a convenience store and gas station. They hid in a bathroom there.

Kelly, without shoes, found his mom and dad. They all sat on a hill, waiting for Kelly’s younger brothers and sisters to finish school. It was Wednesday afternoon.

“Mom, I don’t feel like anywhere is safe anymore,” said Alison, who was 32 years old.

The police in Mount Horeb couldn’t give out information right away. The Dane County Sheriff’s office told reporters to go to a certain spot, but they didn’t have any new information either.

Worried parents waited at a bus station for their children for a long time. Kaul mentioned that the police were worried about a potential danger, but he didn’t give more information. He added that investigators wanted to talk to students when they met their parents.

Shannon Hurd, who is 44 years old, and her ex-husband, Nathian Hurd, who is 39 years old, were waiting for their 13-year-old son, Noah. He was still at school, which was in a lockdown situation.

Shannon got a text from Noah saying he loved her. She was so excited that she almost tripped while rushing to school from work.

“She said, ‘I just want my child. They’re supposed to be safe in school.'”

Stacy Smith, 42 years old, was at the bank on Wednesday when she saw police cars rushing by. She also got a text warning about an active shooter.

At first, she couldn’t find her two kids – Abbi who’s in junior school, and Cole who’s in seventh grade. Eventually, she got through to Abbi on the phone, but Abbi could only whisper because she was hiding in a closet and couldn’t talk properly. After a while, she managed to talk to both of them and found out they were safe.

“She couldn’t believe it. People talk about this everywhere else, but not here,” she said.

Schools all over the country are trying to stop shootings from happening inside their buildings. They’re doing this by using things like better locks and security cameras, practicing what to do if there’s a shooter, and using technology like digital maps. They also rely on teachers and school staff to notice if students are having problems with their mental health early on.

The school district’s superintendent, Steve Salerno, said that recent security improvements helped prevent a more serious incident. He mentioned that students quickly informed staff about seeing someone suspicious outside the school, but didn’t give more details.

Salerno told reporters that it’s something you hope you never have to go through.

Mount Horeb is a small village with about 7,600 people. It’s known for being home to the main office of Duluth Trading Company, a store that sells outdoor gear. The village also calls itself the “troll capital of the world” because there are sculptures of trolls all around the downtown area.
