On January 18, Google Investment announced its commitment to invest $1 billion in the construction of a data center located just outside London. This substantial investment reflects the US tech giant’s ongoing efforts to meet the growing demand for internet services in the region.

Alphabet-owned Google has announced the establishment of a data center on a 33-acre (13 ha) site it purchased in 2020. The facility will be located in Waltham Cross, a town about 15 miles north of central London. As said by the tech giant.

The UK government, which is actively advocating business investment to support the development of new infrastructure, particularly in emerging areas such as technology and artificial intelligence, described Google’s investment as an important show of confidence in the country.

“Prime Minister Rishi Sunak highlighted that the $1 billion investment underlines the UK’s position as a center of technological excellence with significant growth potential,” according to Google’s statement.

Google made a significant investment in 2022 after acquiring a central London office building near Covent Garden for $1 billion. Additionally, the company secured another site in the nearby King’s Cross area, where it is building not only a new office but also its own residence. AI company, DeepMind.

It comes just weeks after Microsoft announced plans to invest 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) in Britain over the next three years, including expanding its data center capabilities to support the development of future AI services.

In the statement, Alphabet’s Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat stressed that the newly established data center is ready to meet the growing demand for our AI and cloud services. Furthermore, it will provide essential computing capacity to businesses across the UK, as well as contribute to job creation in both the manufacturing and technology sectors.

Google, which has a workforce of more than 7,000 people in the UK, has highlighted that the waste heat produced by its data centers presents an energy conservation opportunity that can have a positive impact on the local community.
