Find My Device Network for Android

As expected from last week, Google has now announced that it’s launching the new and improved Find My Device feature for Android. This works even when your device is offline. It’s starting today in the US and Canada for phones running Android 9 or newer, and will roll out globally soon.

The network will have more than a billion devices, so it will be really simple to find yours, even if they’re not online. As an extra feature for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, these phones can be tracked even when they’re turned off or the battery is dead, because of some special Pixel hardware.

Starting in May, you’ll be able to get new Bluetooth tracker tags from Chipolo and Pebblebee. These tags will work with the Find My Device app, making them easy to locate. They’ll also work with both Android and iOS for unknown tracker alerts, which help protect against unwanted tracking. Later this year, more Bluetooth tags will be released by Anker’s eufy, Jio, and Motorola.

If you’re near a lost device but can’t see it, you’ll get a “Find nearby” button. This helps you locate it close by. This feature works with the new Bluetooth tags starting from May.

If you have Nest devices at home and you lose something, the Find My Device app can help you find it by showing how close it is to those Nest devices. You can also share your devices with others, which makes it easier to find them if they get lost.

Google has added extra layers of protection to its new Find My Device network to keep you safe and your personal info private. Your location data is encrypted from start to finish. Also, there’s a new feature called aggregated device location reporting. It makes it harder for someone to track you back to your home or private places.

Soon, headphone brands like JBL and Sony will get updates for their software. These updates will let the headphones connect to Google’s Find My Device network.

Google’s new Find My Device network was delayed for a while because it was waiting for Apple to add some tracking protections to iOS. Finally, it looks like these protections will be in the upcoming iOS 17.5 update, which should come out very soon. That’s why Google’s Find My Device network is now launching.
