In Manhattan, at Bramlage Coliseum, Gap Goat from the Kansas State women’s basketball team has been a well-liked presence all season long, known for her strong defense skills.
Gap Goat Gains More Fans as Kansas State Women
More and more people are coming to watch K-State’s NCAA Tournament games at the arena, breaking records. Sunday’s game against Colorado at 1 p.m. is sold out. The stuffed goat mascot is becoming popular with the fans.
Gappy, which is a nickname for Gabby Gregory, came up with a cool idea after Coach Jeff Mittie asked team leaders Gabby, Ayoka, and Serena to think of a fun way to celebrate when they make three defensive stops in a row. Gabby’s favorite animal is a goat.
“Lee said the goat motivates us to find openings. Last night, he found eight, and once we get seven, he gets rewarded.”
According to Mittie, teams that create seven opportunities in a game win more than 90% of the time. When this happens, Gappy gets to wear two gold chains, one of which has a pendant shaped like the number seven.
Gap Goat has become even more popular as the season goes on. K-State has won 27 games and lost 6 so far. This Sunday’s game is another chance for Gap Goat to celebrate their success.
Gappy now has his own Instagram account called @gapgoat7. He’s also created lots of cute baby Gap Goat toys and accessories. You can buy them all from Gregory’s shop on Amazon.com. And during the NCAA Tournament, he’s wearing a special pass that lets him into the media area.
Now, the goat has gone outside Bramlage Arena and the nearby Ice Family Basketball Center.
“Lee said he loves Ice. It’s like his home, and he never stops working there.”
“He joined us for football practice because he was feeling a little bored. The other day, he also joined us to see the Classy Cats, the dance team. He loves supporting all K-State sports.”

Actually, both the soccer and volleyball teams posted videos on social media that featured the mascot.
Gregory said it was nice to see support from other K-State teams on social media. He thought it was cool that some teams even included Gap Goat in their videos.
“The football team had a Gap Goat on their side, and the volleyball team had a small Gap Goat in their net. It was cool to see!”
Social media posts shared a message from Gap Goat to teachers, asking them to allow their students to leave school early to attend Friday afternoon’s game against Portland.
Gappy was excited when he heard that the second-round game was sold out on Saturday. He felt the same excitement as he did on Selection Sunday when he found out the Wildcats were a The team secured a 4th seed and is scheduled to play at their home arena.
“Gregory remarked, ‘As usual, he remains completely composed, showing no reaction. “He doesn’t show much emotion, but he mentioned he’s looking forward to getting his new chains tomorrow.”
Gregory needs to be aware.
Lee explained that Gabby resembles his mom, and we’re kind of like his aunts.
