UH Cuts Pay for 350 Nurses Due to Budget Issues.

Over 350 nurses at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, are getting paid less because the hospital is changing its staffing after the pandemic and trying to fix money problems from the last two years.

In a recent memo, it was announced that 350 nurses from Enterprise Staffing Services, who work in departments like surgery, emergency, and intensive care, will be affected by a change.

Starting June 16, nurses who work through staffing agencies during the night will get $65 per hour instead of $75, which is a 13% decrease. Day shift nurses will now receive $55 instead of $60 per hour, which is an 8% cut.

“The memo from UH mentioned that although wages are changing, the new hourly pay is still much higher than what full-time nurses at hospitals or departments typically earn.”

When there weren’t enough nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic, UH made a special team called Enterprise Staffing Services. This team helped by providing more nurses when they were needed.

Nurses from the service work in different places across the UH health system when they need extra help. These nurses aren’t on fixed schedules and are like independent workers.

Staffing services nurses are nurses hired specifically for certain departments, while float nurses are like flexible helpers who go wherever they’re needed in the hospital.

According to UH, nurses from staffing services can cost twice as much or even more than full-time nurses at one hospital. On average, nurses in Ohio make about $36 per hour.

UH said they never planned to pay staffing service nurses so much for a long time because it wasn’t sustainable. The extra money spent on labor is a big reason why UH has been losing money lately.

The hospital lost $256 million in 2023 and $302 million in 2022.

“As we move beyond the pandemic, both external nursing agencies and internal hospital staffing services, like Enterprise Staffing Services at UH, are changing their pay rates.”

A new job at the staffing services of UH doesn’t come with benefits like paid time off. Night shift pays $75 per hour, and day shift pays $65 per hour. Staffing services nurses are encouraged to apply for other positions at UH.
