Angela Chao, who was 50, died on the evening of February 10 after having dinner with a large group at a farm near Johnson City, west of Austin, Texas.

Angela Chao, who was a CEO in the shipping industry and also the sister-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, was drunk when her car crashed into a pond and died in Texas last month. This information has come from a law enforcement report released on Wednesday.

The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office found that Chao’s death was a “tragic accident”. They also found that his blood alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit.

Chao, who was 50, died on the night of February 10. He had dinner with several people at a farm near Johnson City, west of Austin. According to the report, there was a scary situation as Chao’s friends and police officers tried to save her from the Tesla after it accidentally fell into a pond near a guest lodge on the property.

Amber Keenan told detectives that Chao had called her at 11:42 p.m. And told her that the car was in water and she couldn’t get out. They talked for 8 minutes while the car was sinking.

“Chao warned Keenan that the waters were rising and she probably wouldn’t make it. She told him she loved him and said her final goodbyes.”

According to reports, friends swam to the car and someone used a kayak to get out. Another person called 911 at 11:55 p.m. 

When police and firefighters arrived, they went into the water and tried to get inside the Tesla car. He broke the driver’s side window. Then, he walked around until a representative found Chao’s hand.

Emergency responders rescued him from the car and took him to the ground. He was declared dead at 1:40 am on 11 February.

A test revealed that Chao had too much alcohol in his blood, with a level of 0.233 grams per 100 milliliters. This exceeds the limit allowed in Texas, which is .08 grams per 100 ml.

Chao was in charge of her family’s shipping company, called Foremost Group, and also ran her father’s charity, the Foremost Foundation. She lived in Austin, a city about 50 miles east of Blanco County.

Chao was the youngest of six sisters. His parents came to the United States from China in the late 1950s. His eldest sister, Ellen Chao, is married to McConnell. He served as Secretary of Transportation under President Donald Trump and Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush.

Angela’s father, James S.C. Chao said Angela’s name means peace and prosperity in Chinese. He also said that his demise has left a huge void not only in our hearts, but also in the Asian-American community.

After his demise, his father took over as chairman of Foremost Group. Michael Lee, who used to be the president, is now the new president.

Chao’s family includes her husband, father, and four sisters who are still alive.
