Death Toll Reaches 133 in Moscow Concert Hall Attack

At a concert hall near Moscow on Friday evening, a terrible shooting happened. Sadly, at least 133 people have died, and about 145 others got hurt. Rescue workers are still clearing away the debris.

Russia’s Investigative Committee stated that the number of casualties has been released, and they anticipate more victims as the situation progresses.

In his first TV speech since the attacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that the Kremlin had captured all four attackers who carried out the shooting. Additionally, seven others suspected of being connected to the attack have also been arrested.

Putin said, “Everyone involved in this crime will be punished fairly and definitely.”

“We’ll find and punish anyone connected to the terrorists who carried out this terrible attack on Russia and our people.”

On Saturday, Russia’s interior minister announced that all four suspected attackers are foreigners.

The U.S. government told NPR that they think a group called ISIS-K carried out the attack. This group is based in eastern Afghanistan and said they did it on their Telegram channel last Friday.

U.S. intelligence officials recently told Russia they had received intelligence suggesting a potential attack.

Adrienne Watson, who speaks for the National Security Council, said the U.S. Government knew about a possible terrorist attack in Moscow. It might target big events like concerts.

Watson stated that the intelligence-led the U.S. Embassy to warn Americans in Russia about potential security risks. They also shared this information with Russian authorities as part of their usual policy to keep people safe.

Putin didn’t talk about ISIS-K in his speech. Instead, he accused Ukrainian authorities of trying to help the four attackers escape through Ukraine.

“They tried to hide and went towards Ukraine. It seems they had a plan to cross the border there,” Putin stated.

Russian investigators caught the attackers in the Bryansk region near Ukraine. Ukraine denies any part in the assault, saying Russia is using it to gain support for their war in Ukraine.

On Friday night, gunmen with rifles stormed into Crocus City Hall, a big mall and entertainment spot in the west of Moscow. People were there for a concert by the old Russian rock band Piknik.

Terrifying video shows men shooting at people trying to hide or escape through the emergency exits. Some witnesses saw the attackers pouring liquid on the seats and curtains before starting a fire. More videos from Russian authorities show burnt seats and wreckage inside the Moscow hall.
