$1.13 Billion Mega Millions Jackpot Won by Lone New Jersey Ticket

A single winning ticket for Tuesday night’s Mega Millions jackpot, estimated at $1.13 billion, was sold in New Jersey, according to the game’s officials. This win ranks as the fifth-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. It’s also the first time this year that someone has matched all the numbers required to win the top prize.

For over three months, no one has won the Mega Millions jackpot, with 31 attempts passing since the last win by two tickets in California on December 8.

The winning numbers for Tuesday were 7, 11, 22, 29, and 38, with the Mega Ball being 4.

The jackpot was the eighth biggest ever in U.S. lottery games. The largest amount ever won in Mega Millions was $1.602 billion. This happened last year on August 8, when one person in Florida had the winning ticket. The biggest lottery prize in the U.S. was $2.04 billion from a Powerball game, and it was won in California in February 2023.

If you win the jackpot, you can choose to get all the money at once as a big cash amount, or you can get it paid to you a little bit each year for 30 years. If you pick the yearly payments, you get the total amount of the jackpot. For Tuesday night’s drawing, the big cash amount you could take all at once was estimated to be $537.5 million before taxes.

Mega Millions has its lottery drawings on Tuesday and Friday evenings, while Powerball does its drawings on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings. As of Tuesday night, the estimated jackpot for Powerball was $865 million.

To win the Mega Millions top prize, you need to match all five white balls and the yellow Mega Ball. You can still win smaller prizes, starting at $2, by matching some of the numbers drawn. While the chance of winning any prize is 1 in 24, the chance of winning the jackpot is much slimmer, at 1 in 302,575,350.

Mega Millions lottery tickets are available for purchase in 45 states, as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The price for a basic ticket is $2. Players have the option to pay extra for special features that can boost the amount won from prizes other than the jackpot.

The upcoming Mega Millions lottery will start with an estimated jackpot of $20 million. This amount is the initial prize for the series.
