Comedian Joe Flaherty, one of the creators of the famous Canadian TV show “SCTV,” has passed away at the age of 82 in Toronto.

On Monday, Flaherty passed away after a short illness, according to his daughter Gudrun who announced it on Tuesday.
Flaherty, born in Pittsburgh, worked for seven years at The Second City in Chicago before moving to Toronto to help start the theater’s branch there.
He acted with John Candy and Catherine O’Hara in a show called “SCTV.” It was about a funny TV station called Second City Television. Flaherty played characters like the boss Guy Caballero and a spooky TV host called Count Floyd.
Other actors who were in the same shows included Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and Andrea Martin.
He got awards called Emmys in 1982 and 1983 for writing on a TV show called “SCTV”. After that, he kept working in TV and movies for many years.
He became known to younger audiences by playing a mean heckler in the movie “Happy Gilmore” from 1996 and as a traditional dad in the TV show “Freaks and Geeks,” which aired from 1999 to 2000.
“Wow, I really looked up to Joe when I was a kid,” said comedian Adam Sandler. “He always made me and my brother laugh with characters like Count Floyd and Guy Caballero. We loved everything he did.”

“His performance as the border guard in Stripes was fantastic. It was so fun having him tease me while we played golf. He was really nice and a genius comedian. He was a really kind person. It’s a perfect mix. Sending love to his kids and thanks to Joe for all the amazing things he did for us.”
Flaherty had strong connections to Toronto and worked closely with Humber College as an artist-in-residence.
“Dad was an amazing person. He loved old movies from the ’40s and ’50s a lot. They were like his favorite thing in the world! He didn’t just watch movies for fun, though. They really mattered to him, especially for his work on ‘SCTV,’ a TV show he was on. He loved being part of it and was super proud of how well it did and of all the awesome people he worked with.”
