It’s time for Biden to drop out so Democrats can run a historic two-woman ticket.
No American political party needs a reset more than the Democrats
The calls for President Joe Biden to step down are growing louder. Quiet suggestions from leaders like Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, and Hakeem Jeffries are now being publicly vocalized.
It’s time to admit it – Joe Biden’s time is up for the Democrats. He had a long and remarkable career that ended with the presidency he always wanted. However, he has not been able to defeat former President Donald Trump, whom he defeated in 2020.
It’s time for a change, and it needs to happen now, not later. Biden should complete his term but step aside from the campaign and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the primary candidate.
It’s hard to believe the party would risk an open Democratic National Convention in Chicago, just four weeks away. That could lead to chaos.
It is hard to imagine for the Democratic Party’s Black women supporters, who remained loyal to Biden even as his poll numbers dropped, that they would accept any other presidential candidate than Harris, who is the first Black, South Asian, and female vice president of the United States.
Harris, 59, has an impressive background. She was California’s attorney general, has served in the US Senate, and was vice president for four years. On July 11, Biden said at a news conference that Harris was “qualified to be president.”
The ticket Democrats should push after Biden drops out
Democrats should support the ticket if Biden drops out
California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to run for president in four years. Meanwhile, people familiar with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro say he has been preparing for a presidential run since high school.
Democrats need more than just experience and ambition. They need a ticket that feels historic if they want to move on from Biden’s downfall.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, 52, is a well-known figure in a key swing state. She was easily re-elected to a second term in 2022 and is now legally barred from running for a third term.
Democrats should really promote the historic idea of putting two women in their 50s on the ticket. At the same time, they can point to the contrast with Trump, who is 78 and often slurs his words at rallies or deviates from odd comments about sharks, Hannibal Lecter, and other things that scare him.
The Harris-Whitmer campaign could energize Democrats against Trump
Trump’s meandering speech during his party’s nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention showed how vulnerable he is to another defeat.
We were told Trump would promote unity. But he couldn’t stick to that theme for even 20 minutes. Instead, he spent more than 70 minutes spewing exaggerations and lies, fueling division with his usual culture-war remarks.
Imagine two experienced women, strong advocates of the Democratic platform who have successfully defended reproductive freedom from 2022, facing Trump and his new vice-presidential nominee, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio.
I’ll definitely be watching those debates.
Harris and Whitmer could criticize Trump for the same reasons voters did in 2020. They could also target Vance, who has gone from being a respected author critical of Trump to a proponent of authoritarianism.
Harris could bring a zeal that Biden has run out of
Biden’s poor performance in the June debate and his failed attempt to stage a comeback were the beginning of his political decline. He could not effectively counter the lies Trump spread during their face-off.
Harris would bring a prosecutor’s determination to fact-check Trump, a candidate who becomes volatile when challenged by a woman in any setting.
Vance’s stance on abortion is tougher than Trump’s, as he opposes exceptions for rape and incest and supports a national ban. Imagine Whitmer challenging Vance on his view that divorce, even in abusive marriages, is a fraud caused by the “sexual revolution.”
Don’t get me wrong — I’m not saying that the Harris-Whitmer ticket will quickly take the lead and leave Trump and Vance far behind. Right now, Trump has a strong chance of winning a second term.
However, Harris and Whitmer could change that. Simply changing the ticket would attract the attention of voters who aren’t yet paying attention to the presidential race.
This could increase attention to the debates, which could be a good way to reach voters who think the 2024 election is too chaotic to be worth getting involved in

Potential attacks on both Democrats are pretty easy to predict
Biden has put Harris in charge of border security. Meanwhile, Trump has used illegal immigration to falsely claim it is leading to violent crime, when in fact crime rates are going down.
Harris could more clearly argue that Trump pressured Republicans to reject a bipartisan immigration bill in the U.S. Senate. This bill could have addressed many of the concerns of both political parties.
In 2020, Governor Whitmer was the target of a kidnapping plot, and several people involved were convicted. The incident sparked conspiracy theories from far-right groups, which Trump’s Republican Party has quickly embraced.
Who better to debunk conspiracy theories than a candidate who has been the target of an actual conspiracy?
Whitmer is clearly getting the GOP’s attention. At their party convention in Milwaukee, Republican delegates from her state criticized Trump and Vance while nominating her.
RNC speakers also launched several attacks on Harris.
This is a huge stage, giving national attention to two Democrats who are not the primary candidates. Republicans would not criticize Harris and Whitmer so much if they did not see them as real threats.
Biden should consider leaving office highlighting his accomplishments in the White House and his role in starting a new chapter for the Democratic Party.
