Murray won two times in PGA Tour.
Golfer Grayson Murray 30 dies by suicide
The golfer Grayson Murray, who was 30 years old, has passed away. He got sick and had to leave the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge during the second round on Friday.
The day after Murray passed away, his parents said in a statement from the PGA Tour that he took his own life.
“Eric and Terry Murray want to thank the PGA Tour and everyone in golf for their support. Grayson had a tough life, and even though he passed away, we believe he’s at peace now.”
Murray was really good at golf. He started playing professionally in 2015 after being one of the youngest golfers ever to do well on the Korn Ferry Tour. But his career was up and down, moving between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour a lot. Sometimes people didn’t like him much because he got mad a lot during games.
He showed his talent by winning twice on the PGA Tour – first at the 2017 Barbasol Championship and then at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii.
When Murray won the Sony Open, it seemed like things were looking up for him. He had struggled with anxiety, feeling down, and drinking too much, but he said he hadn’t had a drink since early 2023. He also admitted that when he first started playing professionally after college, he wasn’t ready for the challenges of life on the road.
He thought he was unstoppable after winning as a 22-year-old rookie. Even when he won, he played while hungover for three days. Winning as a rookie was both the best and worst thing that happened to him because it made him feel invincible.
Murray said that his faith and his fiancee are what keep him steady, and he talked about how he’s getting better after a tough time.
Murray said, “For those who don’t know me, I’ll prove myself with my actions, and they’ll support Grayson again. I’m much happier now and enjoy myself more. I don’t get too upset over a bad golf shot anymore. Things won’t be perfect, but they’ll definitely be better.”

The PGA Tour thought about delaying the Charles Schwab Challenge because of Murray’s death, a big shock for the golf world. But Murray’s parents said the tournament should go on as planned because that’s what their son would have liked.
“We’re sad to say that Grayson Murray, a PGA Tour player, passed away today. It’s really hard to put into words. The PGA Tour is like a family, so when we lose someone, it hurts a lot. We’re thinking of Grayson’s loved ones and hoping they find comfort.”
Grayson’s parents told us they want the tournament to go on, even though it’s hard after their loss. They said Grayson would have wanted it that way, so we’re going to respect their wishes and continue with the tournament.
Murray grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and played golf at Wake Forest, East Carolina, and Arizona State before becoming a professional golfer. He played in 141 PGA Tour events and finished in the top 10 ten times, winning twice.
The PGA Tour has sent counselors to the tournaments this week to help players deal with their feelings of sadness. They’ve also offered counseling online for any players who need it.
