ETtech Explainer: What is SearchGPT, OpenAI’s response to Google Search
OpenAI is challenging Google’s dominance through SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine that provides real-time Internet information.
How will SearchGPT be different?
OpenAI announced that SearchGPT will provide concise search summaries and source links, allowing users to ask follow-up questions for relevant answers.
OpenAI announced that SearchGPT is available to a select group for feedback and plans to integrate it into ChatGPT soon. Interested users can join the waitlist at chatgpt.com/search.
“AI search will soon become the main way for people to search the internet, and it’s critical that it supports and respects journalism and publishers,” Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, said in an OpenAI blog post.
we think there is room to make search much better than it is today.
we are launching a new prototype called SearchGPT: https://t.co/A28Y03X1So
we will learn from the prototype, make it better, and then integrate the tech into ChatGPT to make it real-time and maximally helpful.

Background
Major search engines such as Microsoft, Bing, and Google have integrated AI, with Microsoft using technology from OpenAI and Google launching AI Summary at its developer conference in May.
Google’s new AI feature
Google’s new AI-generated query summaries, called Overviews, have raised concerns about potentially reducing advertising revenue opportunities. Google’s new feature provides a summary of information at the top of search results, above traditional links, to directly answer a user’s query.
OpenAI’s GPT-4o mini
On July 18, a Microsoft-backed company released GPT-4o Mini, a budget-friendly and energy-efficient AI model designed to reach more customers.
The company said it surpasses the current GPT-4 model in chat preferences and scored 82% in the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) test.
Free, Plus, and Team users can now use GPT-4o Mini instead of GPT-3.5 Turbo.
Current market status
Google was the search engine market leader with a 91.1% share as of June, according to StatCounter.
Shares of Google’s parent company Alphabet fell 3% on Thursday following the OpenAI announcement.
