Eminem Throws Shade in New Song “Houdini” – Mentions Megan Thee Stallion and More Ahead of Summer Album

Yesterday, rap legend Eminem released a scorching new single titled “Houdini” in anticipation for his forthcoming album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace) dropping later this summer.

On the aggressive posse cut, the rap god threw shots at a handful of other celebrities using veiled lyrics and metaphors.

The biggest point of speculation is Eminem name-dropping Megan Thee Stallion. He spits “If I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me / Would I really really have a chance for a feature? / I don’t know, but I’m happy to be, back like abra-abracadabra.” Eminem is obviously impressed with Megan’s rising success but is Megan being salty or is Em just joking?

Megan’s not the only public figure mentioned in “Houdini.” The track is littered with references to other rappers, celebrities, and celebrities some of which are cool and others not so much.

As always, Eminem’s blade-like lyrics seem to be aimed at the greatest dramatic effect and drama all across the board.

The song’s dense lyricism is perfectly paired with an equally aggressive instrumental produced by Dr. Dre with possibly a few other superstar producers touching it up.

Dre and Em always sound evil together producing contemporary beats that highlight the rapper’s agile rhyme schemes and barb-wire-styled punchlines.

Lyrically, “Houdini” finds Eminem coping with fame, success and his personal demons using the life and persona of the famous escape artist as a metaphor.

“Little baby devil with the forked tongue and it’s stickin’ out” and “Still a white jerk pullin’ up in a Chrysler to the cipher with the Vics, Percs, and a Bud Light shirt” are just examples of his gross-out style.

The music video for the song was also released yesterday and its dark and moody imagery complements “Houdini” perfectly. So far, the single has received critical acclaim, with media outlets celebrating Em’s creative growth and skillfully throwing bars at 50 years old.

Not everyone is pleased with the release however, as often Em’s crass lyrics do, the song tends to jump over the boundaries of misogyny and bad taste.

Fans are also intensely speculating and theorizing about Eminem’s famous “killing off” of Slim Shady and what it might mean for his future.

Eminem himself has called Coup de Grace a “hard-hitting” back-to-basics album and says he aims to leave his most controversial and childish alter ego behind him.

This has some listeners looking forward to a more serious artistic expression and others worried he’ll throw away the part of his persona that shoots from the hip.

“Houdini” is the first of many singles to come but the fiery track has already sparked discussions about Eminem’s place in pop culture and whether he’s as relevant as he’s ever been or finally becoming a relic of a bygone era of rap.

Time will tell what other celebrities and touchy subjects the rap legend has in his sights for the remainder of the album.

But if “Houdini” is any indication, Eminem isn’t holding back his 44-barrel shotgun as he readies himself to blow up this next creative phase – whether it be good or bad. You either hate him or love him but you can never say the man is dull.
