An earthquake hit the East Coast of the United States on Friday morning, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. It made buildings shake and made people worried from Maryland to Maine.
The earthquake was measured by the USGS as a 4.8 quake, and it happened near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It happened just before 10:30 a.m. ET.
There wasn’t big damage reported right away. Officials in the affected cities quickly started checking buildings, bridges, and other structures to make sure they weren’t damaged by the earthquake.
The earth-quake was the strongest in the Northeast in over ten years, according to USGS records.
James Pittinger, who is the mayor of Lebanon, New Jersey, said the earthquake was the most unusual thing he has ever felt. He talked to MSNBC and mentioned that although there haven’t been any reports of big damage yet, his dog got scared and ran away, and things fell off his shelves because of the shaking.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul mentioned that people in the state felt the earthquake.
“We’re currently assessing any impacts or damages caused by the earthquake and will provide updates as we gather more information.”
New York City Deputy Mayor Fabien Levy said that the earthquake didn’t cause any big problems in the city.
Flights were stopped at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and John F. According to the website of the Federal Aviation Administration, Kennedy International Airport is located in New York City.

The Port Authority Transit Corp., which runs a fast train route between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, stopped running trains after the earthquake.
“Crews will check the pipeline carefully just to be safe,” PATCO stated in an update. “Once they finish checking, the service will start again. We’re uncertain about the duration it will require. We’ll give more updates later.”
New York’s transportation authority said trains are running fine, but they’ll check them. New Jersey Transit told riders about 20-minute delays for bridge checks after the earthquake.
Although earth-quakes are uncommon in the northeastern United States, Buffalo, New York, experienced a 3.8-magnitude quake in February 2023. It was the strongest quake recorded in the area in 40 years.
In 2017, there was a 4.1-magnitude earth-quake in the tristate area, close to Little Creek, Delaware, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. Before that, in 2011, a 5.8-magnitude quake hit central Virginia and was felt along much of the East Coast. This caused many people in cities like New York and Washington to leave buildings for safety.
