Deputy US Marshal Dies in Charlotte Shooting

The deputy US marshal who died in the shooting in Charlotte on Monday has been named as Thomas M. “Tommy” Weeks Jr. from Mooresville. In the incident, four law enforcement officers lost their lives, and four others were injured.

At a press conference in Charlotte on Tuesday, Ronald Davis, who leads the U.S. Marshals Service, shared that Weeks, who was 48 years old, passed away, leaving behind his wife and four children.

The U.S. Marshals Service is a group that helps catch people who break the law across the country. Weeks was working with a team called the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force. They were trying to arrest someone on Monday when someone started shooting at them, according to officials. This team includes officers from the federal government, as well as from states and local areas.

It’s not clear what job Weeks had on Monday with the task force.

Three more people who died were Joshua Eyer, a police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, who worked for the Department of Adult Correction, according to officials.

Davis praised Weeks and the others who were killed, calling them brave and courageous.

“Davis said they’re the best in America.”

Davis mentioned that the marshals service is struggling.

He described the loss of a deputy as akin to losing a member of our own family.

Weeks worked for the marshals service for 13 years. He came to Charlotte in 2014 and started in Washington, D.C. in 2011. Before that, he spent eight years with the Customs and Border Protection agency.

Judges and others in the Western District of North Carolina court knew Weeks as someone who was devoted to his job. He did it willingly and with care, according to Davis.

On Tuesday, the district courts closed for a little while to pay tribute to Weeks, as Davis explained.

Chief Judge Robert Conrad of the Western District of North Carolina said about Weeks: “Whenever you asked him to do something, he always did it happily,” Davis explained during the press conference.

Davis described Weeks as the ultimate deputy.

Weeks, also known as “Tommy” or T.W. to his co-workers, was part of the team led by Terry J. Burgin in the marshals service for the Western District of North Carolina. They worked together for many years.

The marshals service helps keep federal courthouses safe and does other important law enforcement jobs too. They make sure witnesses are safe, find people who need to be caught, and handle tough operations when needed.

There are over 3,800 Deputy U.S. Marshals all around the country, according to the service.
