April is designated for raising awareness about sexual assault.
CNMI Stands with Sexual Assault
Savannah Lyn Delos Santos, the SART Manager for the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, expressed gratitude, stating, “We are deeply honored to have your presence at the 2024 Sexual Assault Awareness Month Proclamation Signing Ceremony. Welcome to our cause.”
The NMCADSV hosted a proclamation signing ceremony during which Governor Palacios and Lt. Gov. Apatang officially declared this month in support of the cause.
In his motivational speech, Chief Prosecutor Chester Hinds of the Office of the Attorney General expressed unwavering support for survivors.
According to statistics, fewer than 5% of sexual assault allegations are found to be fabricated, with an even lower percentage in cases involving children. It prompts a bias within me, but I must pose the question: How can we not lend credence to a child who confides in a parent, teacher, or counselor, then bravely recounts their experience to law enforcement, child services, and prosecutors repeatedly in preparation for trial? They face the daunting task of recounting their trauma in court, under the gaze of a jury, spectators, and most unnervingly, their assailant. Yet, despite their courage and persistence, disbelief persists. This pattern must change. I cling to the hope that it will endure.“

Sergeant Frederick L. Sato, Public Information Officer and Crimestoppers Coordinator at the Department of Public Safety, urged collaboration in pursuing justice, achieving closure, and, above all, attaining peace in our lives.
