Samsung Switches to Google Messages in the US

Although Google Messages comes with many of the best Android smartphones today, Galaxy device owners can also use the Samsung Messages app. However, in 2021, Samsung made Google Messages the default messaging app, starting with the Galaxy S21 series in Europe. The Galaxy S22, which comes to the US, also received the same update a year later. Now, it turns out that the recently announced Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 will adopt Google Messages entirely and won’t include the Samsung Messages app at all.

Analyst Max Weinbach found this change in the Samsung Members app, as reported by 9to5Google. The app contained a notice explaining the change and highlighting some of the benefits of Google Messages. Weinbach pointed out that Samsung’s new foldable phone has RCS (Rich Communication Services) turned on by default, which is a nice feature to have. The notice also mentions that Samsung’s messaging app will still be available in the Galaxy Store, but “some features will be excluded.”

Samsung Messages is not completely gone yet

Android expert Mishal Rahman, responding to Weinbach’s tweet, pointed out that Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 units in Canada and Europe will have Samsung Messages preloaded, but Google Messages will be the default messaging app. This change only applies to the US at the moment.

This change was expected, especially after the company decided to prioritize Google Messages over its own app a few years ago. If you’re waiting for your Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Z Fold 6 pre-order to arrive this week, don’t be surprised if Samsung Messages isn’t included.

Moving to Google Messages offers many benefits to Galaxy device users, but some may miss the Samsung Messages experience. This may be the reason why the company has decided to keep the app available on the Galaxy Store, although it may disappear in the next few months.
